Scary Bellevue Ave needs complete shoulders!

This 1/4 mile patch of Bellevue between Nova Rd and Clyde Morris Blvd could have been fixed that last time Bellevue Ave was re-paved about 4-5 years ago, sadly it was not.  Imagine taking the lane up this hill on a bicycle. The car behind you, eager to pass, cannot see the on-coming traffic due to the hill and the curve.  This is an accident waiting to happen.  Adding three 1/4 mile sections of shoulder (red and green paths in the right figure) would allow bicyclists to more safely travel along Bellevue and encourage cars to pass more safely.  Ample grass shoulders are available for this extension.  More details here.

Redesign Turn Lane along Clyde Morris Blvd for Safer Commute

At present, bicyclists are forced into traffic with little warning as the shoulder disappears on north-bound Clyde Morris Blvd after the pedestrian bridge at ERAU.  The curb should be moved inward and the turn lane redesigned as a combination bike lane/turn lane.  More details here.

Median Refuge Island for a Safer Commute to ERAU

A refuge median island like the one on the right in San Luis Obispo, CA would allow ERAU students to more safely cross Beville Rd. and compute from the Chanute Complex Student Residence to the ERAU campus.  Image on the left shows the median at Beville Rd. and Woodcrest Drive. This link has more details.

Update needed to bicycle signs on Beach Street

Daytona Beach signs say "Stay Away", while the Moscow signs say "you are welcome, but be careful".  The latter is a much friendlier message.

Go for Bicycle Friendliness!

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University should apply for Bicycle Friendly University status from the League of American Bicyclists (due August 15, 2015).  The City of Daytona Beach should apply for Bicycle Friendly Community status from the League (due February 11, 2015).  Both applications are part of the League's Bicycle Friendly America program.  Even if the lowest "Bronze" status is not achieved, the League will provide customized feedback on how to make the University and Community better for bicycling.
